The Emergency Service Cadets program (ESC) is an endorsed program at Manea Senior College. This program is designed by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services and is partially funded by the Department of Communities.
The program centres around building personal and social skills through involvement in community service and off-campus enrichment activities. Emergency Service Cadets will suit students who are community minded, enjoy working with others and wanting to develop their leadership skills.
There are three aspects of the ESC program which can all lead to the achievement of a WACE point.
- Becoming a Cadet = 1 WACE point
- Involves learning and completing practical assessment tasks throughout the year which may cover cadet qualities, first aid, fire safety, water safety, radio communication, flag raising and lowering, mapping and navigation, knot tying and drill. Students must also be involved in a ceremony such as ANZAC Day to complete this component successfully.
- Off-campus enrichment activities = 1 WACE point
- Active participation in a minimum of 50 hours of off campus enrichment activities. These aim to develop knowledge and understanding through engaging in new experiences and activities, such as College camps and excursions.
- A minimum of 5 hours of pre-activity planning and/or post- activity planning/reflections
- Submission of a portfolio containing evidence of skills learnt and accumulation of hours.
- Community Service = 1 WACE point
- Active participation in a minimum of 50 hours of community service. This encourages students to engage with different community sectors to either share their skills and abilities with those in need or to volunteer their time.
- A minimum of 5 hours of pre-activity planning and/or post- activity planning/reflections
- Submission of a portfolio containing evidence of skills learnt and accumulation of hours.
This program involves a minimum of one class off-campus each week and contains camps as a part of the program. Successful completion of Recruit Level Cadet may allow students to progress to the Level 1 Cadet program if they elect this again in Year 12.
